Feasibility Studies
If we build it, will they come? is the
much-quoted question (to which the answer is less always yes than in
the film!). Here are some examples of the feasibility studies we
have carried out:
For Ports Skills and
Safety, the employer-led national
body for skills in the
UK
ports sector, we are exploring through direct consultation with employers
how far they are interested in the possibility of a ports apprenticeship
in
Scotland
.
For the London
Borough of Bexley, we explored the feasibility of establishing enterprise space
for young people in redundant workspace in Thamesmead. We consulted a wide
range of local organisations, and young people, and through specialist
sub-contractors provided detailed advice on aspects of the possible scheme
as diverse as day-by-day project management and the creation of a green
roof.
For a consortium on the
Isle of Wight
led by the island's Youth and Community
team, we led a study into the
feasibility of a "One Stop Shop" centre for young people on the
island. Our research included a survey of all secondary schoolchildren on
the island which generated over 2,000 responses focus groups (for
which we were supported by Tim Barnes of Thinking for a Living) and
consultation with potential project partners.
For EEDA,
the East of England Development Agency, and its main partners
(the Regional Assembly and Government Office), we undertook a scoping
exercise looking into the possibility of a Regional Intelligence Centre to
enhance research and intelligence work in the region. The East of England
had a more modest Regional Observatory than other English regions, and the
partners wanted to see what could be done to enhance their capability,
while keeping costs down.
For Groundwork Thames
Valley, we investigated the feasibility of using the Business Improvement
District mechanism on the North Feltham Trading Estate in the Heathrow
area, including conducting an initial survey of businesses on the estate.
They rejected the idea, but the project did get the landowners acting
together for the first time to provide additional services to tenants
